Wellness has become the trend du' jour on social media. Influencers and personalities of all varieties are pumping out videos, reels, and shorts at the speed of light, some with useful and evidence-based tips while others, not so much.
First, let’s start with the basics, what wellness is, and what it is not.
What Wellness is and What it is Not
Wellness is not about dieting or drinking bone broth for a week—although dietary patterns are an important component of physical wellness. Nor is it about buying social-media-famous supplements—although supplements can be an important element of your nutritional wellness. And it’s not about working out daily or building muscles to rival Arnold Schwarzenegger's physique—although daily movement is an essential component of your wellness journey.
Wellness is about taking a holistic, wellness-based approach to the improvement of your overall quality of life.
The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) defines wellness as a personal journey toward the mental, physical, social, and emotional betterment of life.
At The Wellpreneur Life, we expand that definition to incorporate the Nine Dimensions of Wellness.
The Nine Dimensions of Wellness
The Nine Dimensions of Wellness form the foundation for a whole-person approach to well-being and serve as the basis for creating a happier, healthier, and wealthier life.
Each dimension is individually complete yet synergistically harmonious, mutually enhancing, and complementary to the other eight dimensions.
Occupational
This dimension of wellness focuses on finding personal fulfillment and enrichment through your work, business, or vocation as an expression of who you are and your life’s purpose.
Physical
This dimension involves expressing love for ourselves through the focused care of our bodies. This includes engaging in regular physical activity that brings us joy, enjoying delicious nutrition-rich foods, indulging in rejuvenating sleep, getting regular health check-ups, avoiding harmful habits, and practicing physical self-care.
Spiritual
The spiritual dimension of wellness centers on enriching your soul by cultivating inner peace, a growing sense of self-awareness, and an understanding of your role as the creator of your life and your impact on others. This dimension may be demonstrated through values, beliefs, gratitude, grace, and practices such as religion, mindfulness, and/or a feeling of connection to the universe or higher source.
Intellectual
The intellectual dimension of wellness encourages adapting a growth mindset rooted in a commitment to the daily expression of lifelong learning, curiosity, creativity and being willing to step outside of your comfort zone, try new things, and learn new skills.
Social
The social dimension of wellness emphasizes creating and nurturing meaningful connections and relationships, practicing thoughtful communication, and fostering a sense of community and support.
Emotional
This dimension of wellness focuses on fostering emotional awareness, emotional self-care, managing emotions in a healthy way, developing resilience, and intentionally considering positive alternatives, choosing happiness, and prioritizing well-being.
Environmental
This dimension of wellness invites you to consider how your environment impacts your overall well-being and to surround yourself with people and spaces that add happiness to your life and encourage, support, enrich, and enhance you are.
Financial
The financial dimension of wellness involves creating and building a happy, healthy, and mutually supportive relationship with money that includes intentionally managing and growing your assets and resources, setting financial goals, reducing debt, planning for long-term financial security and independence, and generating multiple streams of income. It also includes consciously releasing unhealthy habits, counterproductive beliefs, defeating self-talk, and fears around money.
Mental
The mental dimension of wellness focuses on fostering mental well-being by actively managing stress, prioritizing self-care, and maintaining a positive and expansive mindset through mindfulness and self-awareness practices.
The intentional attention on, and focused actions in these foundations of well-being are innately life-changing, soul-awakening, and whole-life enriching expressions of self-love.
Start by creating a vision of your happiest and healthiest self in each of these areas. Imagine who you would be and how you would feel in a life where those visions were a reality. Bring that Wellness Vision to life by meditating on it and creating a Wellness Plan to bring it to life.
